Buddy Bowl

Cougarlicious!

January 11, 2011 - Happy New Year! Oh, you may have heard already, but a few weeks ago the Cougars won their second Buddy Bowl ring in three years. The Cougs beat the 1227s (98.47 - 79.75) in a repeat of Buddy Bowl VII.

The Cougs won Buddy Bowl IX behind Aaron Rodgers' 35 points and somebody named Jimmy Graham who may never be heard from again -- kind of like that guy that made that helmet-catch for the Giants in the Super Bowl vs. the Patriots. The 1227s got hosed by their two starting running backs, who combined for 1.00 total point. Benson was probably drunk, but Turner has no excuse.

The Cougars join the Wisey's Bums and Ladybirds as the only two-time world champs.

Buddy Bowl

Preview

Unfortunately, I cannot give just treatment to the Buddy Bowl this year because I am in Phoenix without access to thebuddybowl.com or other resources. So there are no fun graphics, conference calls, or special features. However, such mistreatment lends itself to our preview writer for the week; a man who himself has always been deprived of proper recognition -- Ryan Leaf. He is using the preview as a warm-up to writing his three new books(http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2010/12/20/qb-ryan-leaf- signs-deal-write-books/). Thanks to the Prof for the heads-up on the overdue book deal. Now, here's Ryan Leaf

(2) Cougars (9-4) vs. (5) 1227 (8-5)

Hey everyone! I've turned my life around. Nobody can stop me. Just like Roddy White, he got dissed in last year's Buddy Bowl, but this year he made it back and is starting. I envision the same thing for myself some day. My books are about "hope, possibility and determination." Those are the passwords I use to get into certain "hostels" in Montreal, but they also describe these two teams. How else do you explain a bunch of bitches like Danny Woodhead (who I'm much taller than), Tony Moeaki (who made my value meal at Whataburger today), and Danny Amendola (who I can drink much more than) making it to the Buddy Bowl? And the 1227s weren't even supposed to get past their first round game! But I do know a lot more of the players on the 1227s, and have written to them asking if they need any help in the offseason with controlling pain or anything. Much like me in high school, both of these teams are proven winners -- the very elite of the BRAS League. This is the 1227s fourth Buddy Bowl (four, yes four!), and they won Buddy Bowl VI during their perfect season. The Cougs won Buddy Bowl VII (against the 1227s) in their first season, and have now gone to two Buddy Bowls in three seasons. I have to go with the momentum, the revenge factor, and the history here. 1227s by 5.

Down to Four

December 15, 2010 - The path to Buddy Bowl IX has been narrowed to four teams. The top-seeded FBRs and Cougs made it through, while the once-proud Bums looked like confused playoff virgins. The 1227s had a furious comeback to knock out the reigning champion Ladybirds.

Final Four Previews

The same four seeds were in the Final Four last year, and the top two ended up playing in Buddy Bowl VIII. Both the FBRs and Cougs were also here last year, when the FBRs beat the Cougs 95.28-86.23. Of all four, only the JJs have never been to a Buddy Bowl.

(1) The F*** Buddy Ryans (11-2) vs. (5) 1227 (8-5)

History: The FBRs have been here before and gotten to the Buddy Bowl, but the 1227s have the experience advantage, having been to two (yes, two) Buddy Bowls. The 1227s are arguably the best 5-seed in recent memory. The FBRs rolled the 1227s by nearly 40 points in week 6. The FBRs would be the fourth team to make back-to-back Buddy Bowl appearances (Bums in BB I and II and in BB V and VI, the Hos in BB IV and V, and the 1227s in BB VI and VII). The FBRs are 25-5 since the beginning of last season, but the Prof needs a ring this year to make his legacy. Unless he's aspiring to be the Thurman Thomas of the BRAS.

Keys to victory: On paper, it looks like the FBRs have more talent, but as was seen last week, the 1227s have some home-run hitters in their lineup in somewhat more favorable match-ups. The 1227s may suffer a letdown after an emotional comeback against the Birds last week, while the FBRs had their letdown last week against the Metros -- but the Metros are so bad that the FBRs sleep-walked to victory. The FBRs have to get at least a TD out of steal-of-the-draft Arian Foster. The 1227s have a very volatile line-up this season, capable of having big games and uninspired efforts. But a franchise with a league-leading 46 100-point games knows how to bring the noise. If the FBRs lose, the only remaining competition for them will be determining which curse is to blame. FBRs by 3.

(2) Cougars (9-4) vs. (3) Raiders of JJ (8-5)

Herstory and History: In the short three-year existence of the Cougar franchise, the team has gotten to the Final Four every season. The Cougs won Buddy Bowl VII, but the JJs, even though they are a charter member team, have never made it to the big game. Believe it or not, the JJs have been to three Final Fours (2004, 07, 08), so the franchise hasn't been as futile as everybody thinks. Cougs beat the JJs by almost 40 points in week 5.

Keys to victory: The JJs ran into and over a terrible Bums team last week, and now get to face a hobbled Cougars team. Aaron Rodgers can't see straight and Bradshaw hurt his wrist while slapping around the LOTs last week. However, the Cougs do have Roddy White who has proven his playoff mettle before -- he just wasn't... ahem... in the line-up last time. This is the JJs best chance to finally get to the Buddy Bowl -- it's just going to come down to personnel selection on gameday, which has been a real weekly adventure with the JJs over the last nine years. JJs by 8.

Playoff Round 1 Previews

Good eye. Yes, that's the poster from the good Dragnet. The one with Tom Hanks and Dan Ackroyd. In honor of that movie, goat leggings, and things that burn the eyes, nose, and throat, here are the weekly previews. Just the facts!

(1) The F*** Buddy Ryans (11-2) vs. (8) Metrosexuals (6-7) -- Most of the time, I have to reference the League archives and recordbooks to check the veracity of my claims, but I don't need it here. No team has ever scored the fewest points in the league and made the playoffs. Until now. The Metros somehow made the playoffs, but will face the top-seeded FBRs. The teams played last week, as well as in week 2. The FBRs average margin of victory in those games was 40 points. That's right. FBRs by 24.

(2) Cougars (9-4) vs. (7) LOTFW (6-7) -- The 2 vs 7 is the classic upset match-up (although it didn't happen last year). The LOTs haven' t won a playoff game in the four times they've made the postseason. The Cougs already have four career postseason wins in only two seasons. The Cougs have been locked into the playoffs for weeks. The LOTs got in by the skin of their teeth. The Cougs won their only head-to-head this season in the week 10 thriller, 115.15 - 112.18 This is really starting to sound like an upset in the making. LOTs by 4.

(3) Raiders of JJ (8-5) vs. (6) Wisey's Bums (6-7) -- The Bums are 3-0 against the JJs in the playoffs, including a win last season when the Bums were the 3 seed and the JJs were the #6. The Bums beat the JJs by 1.35 points in week 3. The teams have changed a lot since then. The Bums have gone 3-7 since that game. And the JJs never picked up Portis like they promised (possibly the difference-maker in their divergent destinies). The JJs have Peyton Manning playing against Tenn on Thursday night, so this game could be over around the same as the Hoyas' undefeated run ends. JJs by 3.

(4) Ladybirds (8-5) vs. (5) 1227 (8-5) -- These two have to a total of four Buddy Bowls, and it is highly likely one of them will be going again this year. The Birds salvaged their season after an 0-3 start. This hasn't been one of the stronger 1227s teams we've seen, but it's still pretty ridiculous to see an 8-5 team in the 5-seed. This will be the 3rd meeting between the two this season (the 1227s won in week 2 and the Birds won last week). In a late-breaking move, the Birds cut their 1st round pick (Ryan Mathews) and picked up the ridiculed Cougar ex-draftee Dexter McCluster! 1227s by 3.
